Applying to Adopt

Finding the perfect cat from any shelter can be a challenging task, but at Hazelbrook Cat Shelter, we are here to assist you every step of the way.

While some cats are social butterflies and are great with children, many of our cats are shy and have specific requirements for their adopter, such as a quiet home without other pets or children.

Before submitting an application, we recommend reading our FAQs to learn about our adoption process, what to expect, and our minimum requirements. Then check out our cat ads on Petrescue.com.au by clicking on any of our cats, below.

In case things don’t work out, we offer a 1-month adoption trial where you can return the cats should things not work out. Our dedicated team will be here to guide you throughout the entire process.

Frequently Asked Questions
where do we list our cats?

We list all our ready-to-adopt cats at the end of this page and on PetRescue.com.au.

We also list our in-progress cats at the end of this page, so you can see who we are treating and preparing for adoption.

We post heaps updates, photos, and videos, on our Facebook, Instagram, and Patreon. Be sure to check them out for more information.

what is our adoption process?

Begin by reading our FAQs and cat listings at the end of this page.

If you’d like to proceed, fill out an adoption application. Tell us about yourself and the type of cat(s) you are looking for. Feel free to list specific cats that you are interested in, but it is not necessary. Our goal is to be a matchmaker and help you find the right cat for your family and lifestyle.

If we approve your application, will then arrange a video house interview with one of our adoption councillors. This goes for about 15 minutes.

We then arrange a time to meet the cat in person, either at our shelter or their home with their foster carer. Please note we do not move cats from their known environmnent for a meeting.

If all goes well, you can complete the adoption agreement form and pay the adoption fee.

Once the adoption fee has been received, you can take your cat home and begin your 1-month adoption trial.

During this trial, you may return the cat for any reason. Medical expenses will also be covered by our charity. 50% of the adoption fee can be returned if the adoption trial doesn’t work out. It is our requirement that all cats are vaccinated, microchipped, desexed, and flea-and-worm protected prior to this trial, with all their paperwork handed over when collecting your cat.

We provide support as needed around introducing a new cat to your home.

How Much Does Adopting Cost?

Our adoption fees are $200 for an adult cat, $250 for a bonded pair of adult cats, or $300 per kitten. This helps us recover some of their medical expenses.

All of our cats are desexed, microchipped, vaccinated, and treated for fleas and worms.

What Is the Difference Between Adopting and Fostering?

Fostering means taking a cat into your home, but only temporarily — you’re basically letting them live with you until they find an adopter they don’t have to stay at our shelter. Cats feel much more comfortable in a home than a shelter, plus it makes our shelter available for new rescues.

Adopting is when you intend to keep them forever.

Please note we don’t offer fostering as an adoption trial.

Will I need Additional Veterinarian Services?

Each cat is health-checked prior to listing for adoption. We cover medical expenses during the 2-week trial, but from there you need to provide the rest. We highly recommend RSPCA Pet Insurance – vet bills are expensive. Download our Cat Care 101 pdf for more advice 🙂

Can I visit the shelter first before submitting an application?

Yes absolutely! Our shelter is open for volunteers and visits. We currently don’t have enough staff to keep the shelter open all the time, but you can send us a message and schedule a time to visit.

Other Ways You Can Help

Donate

100% of donations go towards our shelter and the medical expenses for our rescued cats.

You can donate via bank transfer or card.

Our Patreon has all kinds of fun content, including photos, videos, blogging, and shelter live streaming.

Volunteer

There are so many ways you can become involved, from fundraising, feeding, playtime, admin, or joining our committee.

We always need more volunteers and it’s a great way to help out when you can’t adopter or foster more animals.

Foster

We can only rescue cats when they have somewhere to go.

That’s where our amazing foster carers come in.

We fund all their medical and rehabilitation expenses while you provide their food, litter, and love.
